Pros / Reasons to Buy

  • Very durable
  • Great low price

Cons / Reasons to Avoid

  • Not really fully waterproof
  • Not windproof

The Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s are a work glove which can also be used as a hiking glove and a general glove in three season or shoulder conditions before things get too cold and temperatures take a real dip. For their low price, I think they’re an incredible option, especially if you want something suited to other tasks too.

They’re exceptionally well made and feel ultra soft to wear, meaning you can get on with tasks easily and with mostly full dexterity (apart from using your phone). The soft leather underside is strong and durable, and I found these gloves great for earlier winter season scrambles, never finding a bump or scratch on them.

Analysis and Test Results

I was really keen to test out the Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s which offer a great hybrid mix between a work glove and something that can be used for hiking. Whilst they don’t provide the most intense amount of warmth, I found they work really well as a three season option.

Where they really come into their own is their durability. Being intended as a work glove too, they are very well made, and this means that there is likely no reason these gloves shouldn’t last you a long time. When you consider their price point, this is pretty incredible.

Warmth

I actually found the Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s pretty good for changing seasons. Testing these out at the start of fall/autumn and moving into winter, they provided a decent amount of warmth on days where there wasn’t too much wind chill.

They are aimed at and marketed more as a work glove and are particularly good for things like outdoor work and maintenance. I also found them really good for deicing my car, getting my snow gear ready and other tasks that otherwise would lead me to have cold hands.

I think for anything further than this kind of wear, and further into winter, you will need something warmer. But if you want an all-rounder that you could wear as a hiking glove in shoulder seasons, or if temps don’t get too low, as well as for maintenance, then these are a great option.

Water Resistance

These gloves from Wells Lamont don’t really offer any water resistance at all. The underside is leather, which does of course naturally provide some water resistance. However, the top of the hands doesn’t really at all. This is the section that is naturally more obvious when hiking (though less so when working with them on).

They get wet pretty easily, but they also do say they stay breathable which helps to get your hands warmer, quicker. This is all well and good in warmer temperatures, but in colder scenarios, they don’t dry out particularly quickly from my experience.

For my test hikes, were we had frost, and I needed to deal with my car, I would put these gloves near the dash around the heaters as I was driving to the trail, and they’d be dried out by then. If you do need a waterproof pair, I’d suggest looking at some of the other options we’ve covered in our best hiking gloves guide though.

Wind Resistance

This area isn’t massively covered by the Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s either. But then I don’t really think that’s what they’re intended for. I did find that very quickly into windier hikes or windchill areas, that my hands got cold. Especially if they were exposed when I was using hiking poles. I think that these gloves really are best suited to shoulder seasons and are a light pair that you can have for varied use.

Comfort and Fit

The fit of these gloves was fantastic. I ordered a medium and they fit perfectly. They glide on really easily once you open the Velcro section at the wrist, and they fit on the fingers really well. For me, there was no bunching, and they gave a really nice, close to skin feel which really helped with dexterity.

In terms of comfort, they also feel really soft when they’re on, both internally and externally. They’re a combination of soft leather, spandex and neoprene, so all of the materials are soft, moveable and stretchy to fit around your hands well. I really loved how these gloves felt on.

Ease of Use

I found it pretty easy to do most things with the Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s gloves on. They fit fairly close to the skin, without feeling tight, so I was able to make adjustments to my pack, clear my car, put on traction spikes, use my camera.

As they’re intended more as a work glove for gardening, maintenance etc., they were fantastic for dealing with any of these kind of tasks too, which makes them a good all rounder here. These could be perfect if it never gets too cold where you live.

The only thing that isn’t included is touchscreen sensitivity. Which would be good to see included in updated versions as this would mean you likely wouldn’t need to take these gloves off whilst using, improving warmth well.

Materials

As mentioned earlier, the Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s make use of a 50% leather, 25% spandex and 25% neoprene construction. The leather on the underside of these gloves feels exceptionally soft and I really loved how this felt whilst on.

The spandex and neoprene help with the stretch, which works perfectly to keep your hands feeling well covered. The underside being leather is a really good inclusion as it does help with toughness and durability as well as some help with keeping your hands drier, especially when touching things like wet rock.

Appearance

I personally didn’t like the appearance that much of these gloves. They do look and feel very much like a workwear glove as opposed to more of a day to day glove or hiking glove. I don’t think many people would particularly wear these day to day, but for hiking, they were perfectly fine for me.

I do like the yellow contrasting sections, which does make them easier to find if you drop them whilst outdoors. Or make them easier to see in the bottom of your daypack!

Features

I wouldn’t say that the Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s are a particularly featured glove. But then, I do think they don’t always need to be.

They are marketed more as a work glove, and as such they claim to have breathability that keeps your hands warmer and drier. Personally, I didn’t find they kept my hands particularly warm or dry either used as a work glove or a hiking glove.

I do like the leather palm feature. This is incredibly soft and feels like it’s really well made. It’s very hard wearing against scuffs and abrasions too.

Durability

I do think that from spending some time testing these gloves that they very much are built to last. As work gloves, they’re designed to withstand more tension and heavy use than a regular hiking glove, so this does give them some brownie points.

When looking at them in more detail, it’s really clear that they’re well made. There is no doubt in my mind that if looked after, you’ll still have these gloves in years to come.

Sustainability

Wells Lamont don’t make much of a deal about the sustainability of this particular product, so we can only assume there are no recycled materials used, for example. I do think that the durability of these gloves is pretty incredible with them being a work glove, so this will mean that they stand the test of time.

Price

Considering the price (which currently is set at $16.56/£21.50, I do think that these gloves are a steal. They’re great value for money and for many hikers may be the only gloves you need, especially if you want something you can use as a work glove too. Even with the mark up outside the US, I don’t think they’re particularly arguable, especially when you consider just how well made these gloves are.

Conclusion

I was really impressed with the Wells Lamont HydraHyde Leather Hybrid Men’s gloves. The combination of a work glove that can also be used for hiking is a great mix and something that allows you to have a solid all rounder.

These gloves are incredibly well produced, and very durable considering they’re also intended as a glove for landscaping and similar tasks. This makes them great for shoulder season, and especially more full on ascents that may involve some scrambling.

They’re great on, feel soft and have a real close to the skin finish which makes them easy to do a lot of tasks in. The price just makes them a no brainer. In my opinion, there’s no arguing they’re a great option
