Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove Review

The Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove is a great product that shows how warmth and dexterity can be paired. They’re proof that you don’t need a crazy, heavy duty glove to get great levels of comfort even in colder conditions.

Pros / Reasons to Buy

  • Extremely warm
  • Dexterity offered for the warmth is incredible

Cons / Reasons to Avoid

  • The sizing runs small
  • The cuff feels tight, meaning they take effort to get on and off

The Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove performed incredibly well outdoors, in both snow conditions and cold, rainy situations. I was amazed by just how well these gloves combine dexterity of being able to do a lot, with the warmth and waterproofing they provide.

Having tested a lot of gloves that claim to allow smartphone usage whilst wearing, I know that this often comes with limitations. It’s not like you can really use your phone exactly the same as you would before. However, that’s fairly different with the Sealskinz All Weather gloves.

On other gloves, I’d been able to open my phone, take a photo and go into my maps. With these, I can do much finer movements. The tip of the thumb is more rigid and allows you to use different positions in a more developed way to what you can with other gloves. I’m even able to send a text.

That’s a big deal when outdoors, as it means you don’t have to remove your glove to do most of the tasks you’ll want them for. This is why we’ve awarded these gloves our ‘best touchscreen gloves award’ in our main best winter hiking gloves round up.

Analysis and Test Results

Sealskinz are well known for producing waterproof gear that puts comfort and moveability at the forefront. I found that to be true of the All Weather Insulated Glove. They’re a glove that’s strong, waterproof, windproof and very easy to use.

From my tests, I found that they handle well next to some of the chunkier winter gloves in our round up. However, they’re a much more slimline offering. They show just what’s possible when you combine dexterity with insulation.

Whilst the cuff does feel a little tight and makes these gloves harder to get on, I didn’t really find myself needing to take them off on my hikes. So this wasn’t as much of a problem as I didn’t find myself struggling to put them on when my hands were cold, or even a little swollen from the temperatures out.

Warmth

One of the things I love about this glove from Sealskinz is that it is designed to be close fitting. This not only offers more when it comes to dexterity, but it also keeps very little space between the hand and the glove, removing any potential draughts that may get through.

I’ve put these gloves through their paces in strong winds with my hands exposed whilst using hiking poles. To be honest, I was amazed at first that the lightweight, non-bulky feel of these gloves allowed for such good protection from the wind, then I just took it for granted and found it hard to go back to any other gloves!

These gloves will comfortably keep you warm and dry in snow, ice and colder conditions. Whilst they’re not the most snuggly inside, that isn’t always what you need. Sometimes you just need a lightweight glove that gets the job done. The Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove does just that and more.

Water Resistance

These Sealskinz gloves boast the brands in house ‘Aquasealz’ membrane which is 100% waterproof. They are just that. For me, having waterproof gloves is very important as I find myself hiking in conditions a lot with changeable weather.

Through my tests, I’ve found that I never need to worry that these gloves will reach saturation, because they just don’t. They’ve been hammered with heavy rain and show no signs of letting anything through.

What I also like is that they have a polyester lining that wicks moisture away, meaning that you’re not building up excess sweat on your hands. This is often a problem with harder shell fabrics, so I was happy to see this wasn’t an issue with these gloves.

Wind Resistance

The wind resistance offered with these Sealskinz waterproof gloves is next level. Often, wind resistance in gloves seems to come from a fairly bulky design. However, these gloves are a great example of what can be achieved when balancing dexterity with wind resistance.

In fact, when I first started testing these gloves, I was really surprised at just how well they handled the wind. I’ve tested them a lot whilst using hiking poles where my hands are exposed, and it feels like the wind is just passing past you.

Another great thing when it comes to wind resistance is that you don’t really need to take these gloves off because you can do so much with them on. That’s great news as it means your hands are never getting cold or battered by wind.

Comfort and Fit

When I first ordered the Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove, I got them in a medium, which is the size I usually wear. I followed the size chart too, and all looked good to go.

However, when I received them, they were too tight, and I had to exchange them for a large. So, I do think that the sizing runs small. My advice would be to measure before you order, and if you’re a little unsure, size up.

That said, I do wonder if the close to skin feel that these gloves are designed to have may be one of the reasons they feel like they run small. They are certainly a tighter glove than pretty much any of the other gloves we’ve tested in our round up.

The wrist band is also quite tight to get on too. Opening the Velcro patch helps here but it would help more if Sealskinz looked at changing the material around this section to something with more stretch.

However, once on, because of the dexterity they offer, you won’t find yourself needing to take them off very much. Any issues with them being a little bit of a tight fit around the wrist to get on will be at the beginning of your time outdoors, where your hand is likely to not be sore or swollen from the cold.

In terms of comfort, these are areas I’d love to see improved in updated designs of this Sealskinz glove. But once on, the inside feels comfortable and practical.

Ease of Use

This is an area where these gloves really shine! In fact, I have actually never been as impressed by the dexterity offered on a glove as I have by these.

Many other gloves offer a touchscreen compatibility, and this is pretty limited. With these gloves I had full use of my phone in my tests. Texting, using maps, taking photos. Anything you can think of. I could also make finer adjustments with my camera, adjustments to my hiking poles. Basically, they’re just like an extension of your skin.

I think this is one of the areas where these gloves really pay off. They mean you don’t need to make the trade off between extreme warmth in colder conditions and being able to actually use the things you’re likely to need whilst outdoors.

Materials

The Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove use a combination of synthetic and animal-based materials. This mixes between polyester, neoprene, elastane and goatskin leather. I would love to see the brand make a version that doesn’t use any animal ingredients.

The materials used feel strong and hard wearing. When you look at the gloves in close detail, they’re really well made and the stitching is in it for the long haul.

Appearance

These gloves aren’t the most exciting gloves you’ll have ever seen. However, they’re not the worst either, by a long stretch. I think these gloves are understated enough to wear with your everyday clothes as much as they are your outdoor gear.

Being offered in black, they naturally go with anything. When on your hand, their slimline fit hugs the contours of your hand really well.

Features

As mentioned earlier, I think one of the key features of the Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove is the dexterity they offer. The close to skin feel does a lot to allow you to feel like your hands are moving around freely and you can just get on with what you want to do.

This is as useful for getting a drink, making adjustments to your kit and scrambling as it for using your phone or camera. They also allow for micro usage as well, and the thumb tip on these gloves has a better device compatibility than many others I’ve tried.

I also love that these gloves from Sealskinz offer the ability to have a really windproof and waterproof finish, without having to compromise on dexterity. The warmth offered considering the thickness of these gloves is next level.

Durability

From repeated use, these gloves seriously feel like they’re here to last. They show no signs of wearing and they look as good as new. The wrist, whilst harder to get on than some gloves, is really well made, so I have no worries that this area will fault.

Sustainability

Sealskinz don’t make any claims about these gloves being sustainable themselves. None of the materials used seem to be recycled. They also make use of animal products too. It would be good to see this improved over time. They also don’t talk about their sustainable practices on their website, from what I can find.

However, these gloves, for many hikers, will be the only gloves they need. All year round. They’re also incredibly well made and will stand the test of time. This of course has a big impact when it comes to sustainability.

Price

Considering the tech that these gloves offer and the dexterity they allow you to have, I think they are well worth the price point. At the time of writing, they come in at around $60/£55. So, you do pay a bit of a premium if buying outside the US.

For me, they perform pretty well alongside some of the more tech heavy, higher priced gloves in our line up. This is great news as these gloves are worth the investment and will last you for years to come. I don’t really think you need to add a liner with these either, meaning no hidden second purchase.

Conclusion

Overall, I have been really impressed with the Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Insulated Glove. They punch well above their weight when it comes to dexterity, ease of use when on, warmth, comfort and waterproofing.

There are a few adjustments that I’d love to see the brand make with these gloves over time. Improvements to the wristband to make them easier to get on and slightly better cushioning inside and synthetic materials would all be good. However, these areas don’t take away from this exceptional glove.

I think if you want an allrounder that feels like you have the closest thing to not wearing a glove as you can, whilst still providing extreme warmth in very cold conditions, you can’t go wrong here. If you buy this glove, there’s a good chance it may be the only glove you need to buy for a good long time.
