Background

I started my career in photography and worked over many years in production, post production, magazine publishing and editorial. I didn’t start out as outdoorsy, and in many ways this has forged the path to where This Expansive Adventure sits now. I believe you don’t need to be naturally outdoorsy to enjoy the outdoors. There is a lot of judgmental advice out there, and I’m all about making this site as inclusive as possible.

What I write about

You’ll find me writing travel guides which naturally have a sustainability focused edge. You’ll also find me writing hyper focused content about specific hiking trails, swimming information and tried and tested gear reviews of gear I actually know and love.

Naturally, living in the mountains and travelling to adventure focused destinations around the world, all of the travel and hiking guides and product reviews I work on are based on real world experience.

About me

As one of the co founders of This Expansive Adventure, I’ve been here since the start. Those late night evenings dreaming up this site and how it could fill a much needed space for non judgmental outdoors advice and also provide some of the most extensive guides on the internet, brought us to where we are today.

Right now, I’ve settled on living in the mountains of Cumbria, UK, but travel extensively throughout the year and spend particular time in my second love; the mountains of California. I’m never more at home than when I’m in the mountains, amongst the quiet, where I have space to think. I care more about the views along the way than bagging peaks and if there’s a lake swim involved or a waterfall pool to be found, you’ll likely find me there.

What really got me into the outdoors was the loss of my dad close to a decade ago. I started hiking as a way to deal with my grief, and it really helped! Since then, I’ve not been able to stop and my love and passion for the outdoors has taken me to some of the most incredible places around the world. My love of travel grew from that and things just blossomed from there. As well as that, my passion for conservation and sustainable travel naturally followed.

Why I care about what I do

Through my time at This Expansive Adventure so far, I became passionate about providing resources that actually help people – whether it’s planning a trip or finding gear that they actually love. I wanted to provide resources that would allow you, our readers, to get everything you need from one page without having to open 100 Google tabs to get there – because who needs that? Aside from the general geekery around providing the most value I can from my experiences around the world, I care about seeing more people have the opportunity to enjoy time outdoors, on the trail (or in whatever way they find they enjoy) without the fuss.
